Loll Designs | 2024–2025 ESG Snapshot

Conceptual ESG Communications Case Study

Project Overview

This project translates publicly available sustainability disclosures from Loll Designs into a structured ESG communications snapshot designed to improve accessibility, narrative clarity, and stakeholder readability.

Loll Designs is a Duluth, Minnesota–based manufacturer of outdoor furniture built primarily from recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The company operates within a circular design model, converting post-consumer plastic waste, primarily recycled milk jugs, into durable, long-life consumer goods.

Since 2005, Loll Designs has diverted over 135 million milk jugs from landfill and incineration pathways through product manufacturing and material reuse systems.

This case study synthesizes environmental, social, and governance data into a unified ESG communication format aligned with common reporting frameworks (GRI-style categorization, B Corp disclosures, and TRUE Zero Waste certification criteria).

Project Objective

To develop a structured ESG narrative that:

  • Translates technical sustainability reporting into accessible communications

  • Organizes environmental, social, and governance data into a cohesive framework

  • Highlights circular economy performance and material flow systems

  • Demonstrates how ESG reporting can be adapted for public-facing storytelling and stakeholder engagement

Role & Scope

Role: Sustainability Communications & ESG Content Development (Conceptual Project)

Scope of Work:

  • Public data synthesis from corporate sustainability disclosures

  • ESG framework structuring (Environmental / Social / Governance)

  • Narrative development and editorial refinement

  • Material topic identification and categorization

  • Translation of technical sustainability metrics into accessible communication formats

  • ESG snapshot formatting for digital/portfolio presentation

Methodology

This ESG snapshot was developed through structured analysis of publicly available materials, including:

  • Loll Designs sustainability and corporate responsibility disclosures

  • B Corp certification reporting (B Impact Assessment summaries)

  • TRUE Zero Waste certification documentation

  • Cradle to Cradle Certified™ product data

  • Secondary environmental and circular economy frameworks

Analytical Approach

  1. Data Collection – Aggregation of publicly available ESG and sustainability metrics

  2. Material Topic Identification – Classification into Environmental, Social, and Governance categories

  3. Narrative Structuring – Translation of technical data into stakeholder-readable sections

  4. Comparative Framing – Alignment with standard ESG reporting structures (GRI-inspired organization)

  5. Communication Refinement – Editing for clarity, consistency, and accessibility

ESG PERFORMANCE SUMMARY

Environmental Performance

Circular Materials & Product Design

Loll Designs operates within a closed-loop material system centered on post-consumer HDPE plastics.

  • Over 95% of product inputs consist of post-consumer recycled HDPE, primarily reclaimed milk jugs

  • Over 135 million milk jugs have been diverted into production since 2005

  • Manufacturing offcuts are continuously re-ground and reintegrated into production or routed to regional recycling systems

  • Product architecture supports disassembly and end-of-life recyclability

Packaging Systems

  • Transitioned to 100% curbside-recyclable and compostable packaging in 2024

Zero-Waste Manufacturing

Loll Designs’ Duluth facility operates under a TRUE Gold Certified zero-waste framework.

  • 97.4% facility-wide waste diversion rate (TRUE Gold Certified, 2025)

  • Internal reuse systems reduce waste generation to below 5% of total material inputs

  • Manufacturing waste streams are systematically recovered, reused, or recycled

Energy & Climate Systems

  • Operations powered by 100% renewable electricity (since 2023)

  • Waste heat recovery systems support winter facility heating requirements

  • Scope 3 emissions inventory in development (target completion: 2026)

  • Life Cycle Assessment underway to establish product-level carbon intensity baselines

Social Responsibility

Workforce & Wellbeing

Loll Designs integrates employee wellbeing into operational structure.

  • 100% employee healthcare coverage
