About
Hello! I’m Mary Kate Ahkin (Ahles), a marketing and communications manager with expertise in sustainability, creative strategy, and visual storytelling.
With a degree in Sustainability Management and a professional background spanning marketing in higher education, nonprofits, and small businesses, I specialize in building campaigns that elevate organizational impact while advancing environmental stewardship. My work includes developing cross-channel marketing strategies, managing communications for Michigan Technological University’s College of Business and College of Computing, and creating compelling content for regional startups and nonprofits.
I also bring over five years of professional photography and media production experience through my business, M/K Studios, where I deliver branding, commercial, and lifestyle content. This creative lens informs my ability to craft narratives that connect audiences to mission-driven work.
To complement my professional experience, I’ve earned several advanced certifications. I hold an FAA Part 107 Drone License for aerial content and risk management, an Adobe Marketing Specialist certification in digital media strategy, a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt (valid through 2026), and a certificate from the University of Copenhagen focused on the Sustainable Development Goals. These credentials strengthen my ability to merge technical precision with creative problem-solving, ensuring measurable and impactful outcomes for the organizations I serve.
Community engagement is central to my career. I volunteer as marketing coordinator for Surfrider Northern Michigan, collaborate with Trout Unlimited Great Lakes on conservation storytelling, and contribute to regional advocacy efforts as a member of the Great Lakes Business Network.
Originally from Wisconsin and now based in Calumet, Michigan, I’ve dedicated my career to advancing initiatives that strengthen both communities and ecosystems across the Great Lakes. My goal is to continue leveraging marketing, strategy, and sustainability expertise to support organizations in achieving lasting, measurable impact.

Where Storytelling Fuels Stewardship
Photography and marketing have been passions of mine since I started my small business in high school. Over the years, I've balanced my love for the creative arts with an interest in environmental and political science. This unique blend of interests led me to pursue a degree in sustainability management, where I've continued to weave my creative and analytical skills together. My journey has been one of integrating artistry with purpose, driven by my commitment to both impactful storytelling and sustainable practices.

My educational path has been anything but linear. I began studying marketing at Northern Michigan University, only to quickly realize the field wasn’t a fit for me though, ironically, it has played a much larger role in my career than I ever anticipated.
I then transferred to Michigan Technological University to pursue Scientific and Technical Communication, with the goal of writing manuals for Volvo. I loved the program, but the global pandemic had other plans for me.
Determined to finish my degree, I transferred again this time to the University of Wisconsin Extended Campus completing my studies online while working as a content writer for a winter sports startup. It was during this time that I discovered Sustainability Management, a field that truly resonated with me. I loved its intersectional approach and its focus on solving the real-world challenges we face today. What excites me most is how it blends persuasive communication and scientific rigor with grounded business practices. As a natural systems thinker, this field and program felt so right for me. hey say the third time’s the charm.

My favorite software and tools include Lightroom CC for photo editing, Procreate for digital drawing, and Adobe Creative Suite for side projects like design and video editing. I also rely on Notion for life planning and organization, keeping everything streamlined and efficient. Additionally, I use Tableau, Squarespace, WordPress, HubSpot, and Meta Planner on a weekly basis for data analysis, website management, content creation, and planning.

What sets me apart is my ability to blend creativity and science with a commitment to sustainability. As a photographer and marketing professional, I focus on storytelling, community, and environmental impact. My diverse background in photography, conservation, and marketing allows me to tackle challenges from multiple angles, delivering solutions that are both visually compelling and socially responsible. I’m dedicated to sharing stories that inspire positive change, whether through imagery or strategic messaging.
I can also swim and surf in subfreezing temperatures. Michigan Tech, one of the schools I attended during undergrad, always emphasized tenacity and I truly believe the students who surf are some of the most tenacious people I know. After lectures and homework wrapped up, we’d head to the lake to chase six-foot waves in 15-degree weather, letting ice build up on our faces as we paddled out. A definition of tenacity to me. And if you can face the trials and tribulations of Lake Superior in November, you can face many adversities in life.

I truly take pride in most of the projects and work I’ve done. Documenting the lives of loved ones, sharing memories, and meeting hundreds of people through my photography business brings me great joy and would make my younger self proud.
I also take immense pride in all the conservation work I’ve completed, especially as a Michigan resident. From documenting a dam removal project to restore a native trout stream to helping local beaches protect their shorelines from encroaching development, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to meaningful environmental efforts. Again, my younger self would be very proud.

Outside of work, I enjoy exploring the natural beauty of the Great Lakes region through activities like surfing, skiing, and sailing. I’m passionate about connecting with nature and staying active outdoors. I also dedicate time to my local community, working to build stronger, more connected relationships through volunteer work and conservation efforts. In my downtime, I love spending time with family and friends, traveling to warmer places, and enjoying a good book or documentary that expands my knowledge of the world. My latest passion is restoring my home, which was built in 1899 and hanging with my dog Ursula.

I shoot with Canon for photography and DJI for aerial images. My iPad Pro has been invaluable for drawing, note-taking, contract signing, and design. I rely on LaCie hard drives, regularly expanding my storage.
My home computer and self-built server, which I created in 2022, are essential for time management and image quality. I appreciate the big screen, fast performance, and the quiet hum of my server.

I still dream of becoming a director of sustainability for a great company like Arc’teryx, Salomon, or NSP Surfboards. I’d also love the chance to work at a ski resort and return to the ski industry. Combining my education in sustainability with my passion for outdoor sports would be the ultimate dream team for me.
For now, I love living in a town surrounded by higher education and research. While it’s not where I ever pictured myself, I’m beyond happy to be here. Any day I get to interact with college students and hear about what they want to become when they grow up is a good day. Being surrounded by R1 level research in a rural part of the world feels special.
